1. Determine what the teacher wants. By the end of the second semester, you should have an idea of what your teacher considers most important and is most likely to use as exam material.
2. The best way to prepare is to take all old tests and quizzes and use them as study guides 3. Finish the reading early. Aim for one week before the exam to be safe. If a midterm, this is not always possible. However, being at least up to date can cut preparation time by four or more hours. 4. Consider using index cards. By the time you are done, some of the information is imprintedand a lot of factual material in your brain. If index cards aren't your thing, figure a way to do this on your laptop or on smaller and smaller pieces of paper. 5. Read class notes promptly. Leave at least 1 ½" inches in the outside margin. After you've reviewed your notes, use a different colored ink or highlighter to make short notes beside the material 6. Use colored tabs for texts. They work for notes as well. The idea is to write one or two word topics on each tab before you stick it at the appropriate spot in your textbook or other material. 7. Join a study group. Get no more than five of your classmates together a few days before the midterm or final. A larger or a smaller group usually isn't productive. Rehearse the questions. If factual, you can make a list of the ones likely to appear on the test. For potential essay questions, pick the most likely half dozen or so. Either practice answering them during the study session or back in the dorm. 8. Take everything you need. For sitting exams administered on paper, do you have at least two pens or pencils with you? Water to drink? 9. Get up half an hour early. You should get some food if so inclined and be actually awake for the test. You also have a few minutes to read over any last-minute notes. |
