Chemistry
Course Outline and Grading Procedures
Chemistry is a full year course designed to introduce you to chemical
principles that govern the world in which we live. Upon successful completion of this course
you will recognize and understand the importance of chemistry in your life, develop problem
solving and critical thinking skills and become aware of the potential as well as the limitations
of science and technology.
Course OutlineThe following topics will be covered:
Statesof Matter Physical And Chemical Properties Atomic Structure Periodic Table Formulas and Equations
Acids and Bases Structure of the Atom Electron Configuration Nomenclature Using the Periodic Table
Chemical Bonding Compounds Periodic Trends Bonding Energy Conserving in Equations Chemistry of Rocks and Stars
Physical and Chemical Properties Mixtures, Solutions, Solubility and Solvents Behavior of Gases Nuclear Chemistry
GradingGrades will be determined on a total point basis.
Your grade will be calculated by dividing the
total points you received for the quarter by the total points available. Approximate point
values are as follows: Tests = 100, Quizzes = 50, Homework quizzes = 30-50,
Homework= 5-10, Lab reports = 50-100, and Special Projects = 100-200.
Testing ProceduresThe following conditions will be maintained while evaluations are being given. Students
failing to observe these conditions will have his or her grade determined at my discretion and
this may not be related to test performance. Cheating is absolutely prohibited!
No talking until everyone is finished.
Do not leave your seat until you are finished.
No sharing of books, calculators, etc.
No looking at another students work.
Materials You will need the following:
1. A scientific calculator, preferably a TI-30 series, not a graphing calculator
2. A flash drive
3. A spiral bound notebook for taking notes
4. A 1-2 inch three ring binder for handouts.
5. A pocket folder for current work.
6. A bound composition notebook, preferably quad-ruled.
All students and parents will read and sign a safety contract and classroom expectation
handout before students are allowed to perform lab activities.
MAKE UP WORK
All students are resposible to make up work in a timely fashion. My policy is that you have 5 school days from the assignment to make up the work
Failure to make up the work will result in a ZERO.

Note: I generally stay after school on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00 for extra help
unless I have a meeting or other unavoidable conflict. This will be announced in class.
